Boston, a city known for its terrible traffic and chaotic streets, is ranked 89th on WalletHub’s 100 worst and best cities to drive lists.
According to WalletHub, “Most Americans rely upon cars to get around,” as 87% of all daily trips are made in their personal vehicles according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. Driving is a more private and pleasant way to commute. However, it can also be a hassle and costly. On average, drivers spend more than 360 hours driving each year. That’s 15 days. Add to that the cost of lost time and fuel from traffic congestion and you get $564 per driver every year.
WalletHub compared 100 cities in the United States to determine which ones were best for drivers. It did this by comparing four key areas: cost and maintenance, traffic and infrastructure and safety, as well as access and maintenance.
To measure each city, the website used 30 metrics, including the cost of a car, days with precipitation and the per capita car dealerships. Each metric was rated on a 100-point scale, with 100 being the best for U.S. drivers. WalletHub calculated a city’s weighted average across all metrics to determine its overall score.
According to WalletHub, Philadelphia is the worst place to drive in. Boston is ranked 89th. Massachusetts’ capital was also near the bottom in maintenance and cost of ownership, ranking 75th. This is a significant drop from 2021 when it ranked 67th. The cost of owning and operating a new car has risen significantly due to rising gas prices.
Boston has made some improvements in its “driver-friendly” status. The city was ranked 97th for access to maintenance and vehicles in 2021. It is now ranked 88th.
However, Boston also fell in some categories WalletHub’s compared to 2021. Safety was only marginally down, going from 33rd place in 2021 to 35th place in 2022. The traffic and infrastructure category ranked the city 92nd in 2021 and 94th in 2022. According to a 2019 report, the city has the worst traffic congestion during rush hour in the country.
