What a coincidence can it be for a chauffeur of Boston Airport Express MA to get two reservations on the same day for people moving to Maine from Boston. But apparently, it’s not something that’s happening less. Many authorities and Boston Airport Express MA have seen a slight rise in the number of people that are leaving Boston and moving to Portland, Maine, a new study has revealed.
The proven data from the real estate brokerage firm Redfin puts Boston as the 5th most popular metro area where people are moving with 19% of residents seeking out other cities. Portland, Maine, is the most popular destination for Boston residents who are looking to relocate according to Redfin search statistics.
Lynn Hallett, a broker and the owner of Town and Shore Real Estate in Portland, says that it’s not new and she’s witnessed many Boston residents who are looking to move north. Realtor says that she has about 60 percent of her sales to those who are moving to Maine. She has had customers coming from New England states like Massachusetts all the way to California in Texas.
Redfin reports that the pandemic is making homeowners rethink their choices for housing. The study reveals that due to the increase in remote working in the past two years greater than 1/3 of American workers are able to work from home at all times. This allows workers to move to lower-cost homes.
Hallett stated that her business has grown after the lockdowns started and remote workers comprise the majority of her clients. “You could work any location therefore why not do it out of Portland, Maine?” The research attributes the influx in part to the economy and cites data showing that the average Portland property is about $200,000 less than the one in Boston.
“With the threat of a recession and household expenses rising Many people are unable to buy a house in a high-cost area or are looking to be able to save money in the case of an emergency. This means moving to a more affordable area is an appealing option” Redfin Economics Research Lead Chen Zhao said in the study.
