Daily Table Debuts in Boston- As the First US non profit non-profit Grocery Store

In a good news for lower and middle income group residents in Boston, Daily Table has started operations from this city with a good ideology. The goal is to provide healthy and affordable grocery items and ready meals without compromising on quality. The first store opened in Dorchester, MA and welcomed first visitors with shelves full of surplus and aging food items.

On a personal visit to the store we noticed that the prices are actually cheaper than other popular retail marts and regular neighborhood stores. At the Daily Table store in Dorchester, MA canned vegetables are selling for 50 cents each and a dozen eggs for 99 cents. Potatoes are 49 cents a pound and bananas are 29 cents a pound.

“We’re trying to reach a segment of the population that is hard to reach. It’s the working poor who are out buying food but who can’t afford the food they should be eating.” – said Doug Rauch, the man who founded Daily table to The Boston Globe. Mr Rauch has been the president of Trader Joe’s before.

So how does Daily Table offer food items at such low prices?

They source surplus food and good about to reach their sell-by dates from manufacturers, distributors, super markets and even directly from farmers. According to a spokesperson from Daily Table food items nearing sell-by dates are not necessarily bad quality. We regularly buy these from top supermarkets at much higher rates when we have no options left. But when sellers foresee no takers for such products they might want to sell them off at a heavy discount or donate them. This is how Daily Table keeps its prices low.
